Construction season has arrived, where to expect delays

Localsyr

CICERO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Construction traffic is usually a pain, but it might start to seem overwhelming around here.

“It is a little more work than people are used to because of the I-81 Viaduct Project, but our commitment to the community during this time is that we’re going to keep two lanes open during peak hours on all of our highways,” TeNesha Murphy, the I-81 Viaduct Project’s Region 3 Public Information Officer, said.

Work is already happening at the northern interchange of I-81 and I-481 in Cicero and the southern interchange of I-481 and I-81 in Syracuse. So, how can drivers take the right approach when gearing up to take on the highway?

“They can also look us up on our website. We have a website for I-81 that they can find out more information about travel advisories and where things are going to be closed. They can follow us on social media, Facebook and Twitter. We always post work zones on there as well,” Murphy advised.

While all the I-81 construction is happening on the highway, the New York State Department of Transportation still has to focus on their other maintenance.

“We have a construction project with Airport Road, a construction project on Route 31, and we have to maintain our roads, so that’s what we’re trying to do today, filling potholes. We have to mow the grass, we have to pick up litter, we have to fix guardrails.”

The construction might be frustrating, but it’s important to remember to slow down.

“We want our workers to get home safe to their families just how everyone else gets home safe to their families every night. So, please when you’re in a work zone, please make sure you’re reducing your speed and abiding by the speed limit,” Murphy said.

The DOT has its automated work zone speed enforcement vehicles set up in all their work zones, and those who aren’t going the proper speed limit for the work zone will get a ticket in the mail.
