Construction companies are increasingly using internships to expose students to both field and business functions as they develop future talent. HB Construction hosted five interns during summer 2026, giving participants experience across multiple departments and direct exposure to construction operations.
HB Construction structured the program to provide exposure beyond traditional jobsite activities. The interns worked with teams involved in operations, safety, project management, accounting, marketing and field leadership.
The program also included time at active projects, giving participants an opportunity to observe field operations and understand how construction work progresses from planning through execution.
The broader experience showed how project delivery depends on coordination among field personnel and office-based teams.
The internship concluded with a team-based exercise built around a sample request for proposal. The participants developed an approach addressing project scheduling, pricing, site logistics and subcontractor selection before presenting their work to HB Construction leaders.
The exercise provided practical exposure to several activities that affect construction planning and procurement. It also required the interns to coordinate their work and evaluate how decisions in one area can affect other aspects of project delivery.
The interns also participated in community activities, including a backpack drive and volunteer work with Roc Solid to construct a playset for a child undergoing cancer treatment.
HB Construction's program illustrates how internships can introduce students to the range of career paths available within construction, including project management, estimating, safety, accounting, marketing and field leadership.
For contractors, programs that combine office exposure, field experience and practical project exercises can give students a broader understanding of construction operations while helping establish a pipeline of potential industry talent.
