AMERICAN FALLS — The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is scheduled to begin construction on Monday to enhance the intersection of Pocatello Avenue and State Highway 39 in American Falls. The $3.5 million infrastructure project is aimed at redesigning one of the city’s busiest intersections to improve both safety and traffic flow.

The project will introduce a new traffic signal at the Pocatello Avenue/SH-39 junction and will widen State Highway 39 to four lanes from the intersection to Fairgrounds Road. Additionally, new turn lanes will be constructed on SH-39 to facilitate smoother traffic transitions onto Pocatello Avenue.

"This is an important investment in a high-traffic area that will improve both access and safety for local drivers," an ITD spokesperson said.

The current phase of construction is expected to continue through August and will focus on the realignment and widening of the intersection. During this period, all lanes will remain open to traffic, although motorists should expect slower travel times in the active construction zone. Flaggers will be stationed at various times to direct vehicles and ensure safety.

ITD has assured that “access to the American Falls Airport and the Power County Fairgrounds will remain open throughout construction.”

While the majority of the work will be completed this year, ITD plans to return in the spring of 2026 to install the traffic signal.
