Construction Underway for New Fire Station in Newbury Village, Vermont

NEWBURY VILLAGE, Vt. — Work has begun on a new fire station in Newbury Village, marking a significant upgrade for the local fire department. On Friday, Newbury Village Fire Chief John Renfrew, 72, observed as Fornwalt Excavation crews prepared the site, getting ready to pour footings for the $1.2 million facility.
The project replaces the original fire station, which was demolished recently. The new building will feature a larger meeting room, a dedicated chief’s office, and multiple bays designed to house modern fire apparatus, better meeting the needs of the community and first responders.
Renfrew shared a personal connection to the location, saying, “My grandfather built the original one-bay fire station in the 1930s.” Reflecting on the new facility, he added, “This new station should serve the next generation at least.”

The updated station is designed to improve operational efficiency and support emergency response efforts in the area. Construction is expected to wrap up by October, with the fire department aiming to move into the new building shortly thereafter.
Town officials expressed optimism about the project’s positive impact on local safety and community engagement. The larger meeting room will also allow the department to host training sessions and community events, strengthening ties between firefighters and residents.
“The new space will allow us to better prepare for emergencies and foster closer communication with the community,” Renfrew noted.
Funding for the project comes from a combination of local bonds, state grants, and fundraising efforts by the fire department and community members, underscoring the town’s commitment to supporting public safety infrastructure.
As the project progresses, residents look forward to a modern facility that not only honors the fire department’s history but also equips it to face future challenges.
