A construction worker from Pennsylvania is in critical condition after he was struck in a violent hit-and-run crash on I-95 North in Foxboro early Monday morning. Authorities say the driver fled the scene, leaving behind crucial evidence as they continue their urgent search for the suspect.

David Wachinski, a father of two, had traveled from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts for overnight construction work when tragedy struck around 2:15 a.m. on Monday. According to Massachusetts State Police, Wachinski was picking up a sign to help set up a construction detail along the highway when an oncoming vehicle slammed into him and sped off into the night.
Wachinski was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition after suffering life-altering injuries, including the loss of part of his leg.
His family, devastated but united in support, has traveled to Boston to stay by his side. They say the emotional pain is intensified by the driver’s refusal to stop and help.
"A lot of people love him, and a lot of people appreciate him, and he could have just been gone," said his sister-in-law, Mina Thompson. "Someone knows something. Whether it's them who hit him and they're scared and having second guesses or they told a family member, you know."
She described the terrifying hours following the accident, saying, "It was scary. He fought and he's still fighting to survive."
Investigators say the vehicle involved may be damaged, noting that the passenger-side mirror was broken off and recovered at the site. That piece of evidence is now being examined as detectives work to narrow down the type of vehicle and identify possible suspects.

State Police also used the incident as a reminder of the risks faced daily by roadway workers, stressing that distracted or careless driving in work zones can lead to catastrophic outcomes — not only for workers, but for drivers and passengers as well.
Troopers expressed condolences and promised accountability for the victim and his family as the investigation continues. Thompson pleaded for the driver, or anyone with information, to do the right thing.
"It's never too late to turn around and be like hey I messed up and I want to come forward and that's what we're hoping for, just so we can get that closure," said Thompson. "What gets done in darkness will come out to light, so it will come out."
Police believe someone may have seen something or knows someone whose vehicle now has suspicious damage on the passenger side.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Foxboro State Police Barracks at 508-543-8550.
Meanwhile, the Wachinski family remains focused on David’s recovery as he faces a long road of surgeries and rehabilitation.
