BOX ELDER, Mont. — A traffic stop on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation escalated Wednesday evening when two construction workers fled from border patrol agents, according to the Rocky Boy Police Department (RBPD).
The incident occurred at approximately 5:08 p.m., after agents received information that some workers in the area may not have proper documentation. In a statement shared on social media, RBPD said border patrol initiated a stop, during which two men described as Mexican nationals ran from the vehicle into a nearby field.
Border patrol agents pursued the men on foot but were unable to apprehend them. Authorities stressed that while the individuals remain at large, they are not considered dangerous.
“The men do not have weapons and there is no reason to believe the public faces immediate danger,” RBPD said in its statement.
The men were last seen wearing blue jeans, with one in a blue t-shirt and the other in a red t-shirt, according to the police report.
Residents of the Rocky Boy community were urged to remain vigilant and report any information that may help locate the two men.
RBPD asked that anyone with information contact the department at (406) 395-4513.
The situation has raised broader concerns about the presence of undocumented workers in rural construction projects across northern Montana. The Rocky Boy reservation, home to the Chippewa Cree Tribe, has seen increased federal activity in recent months as agencies monitor cross-border migration routes from Canada.
Local officials emphasized that while the search continues, daily life in Box Elder and surrounding areas remains unaffected. Law enforcement agencies, including tribal police and federal border patrol, are expected to maintain an increased presence in the area as part of the follow-up investigation.
