High school students from Marion County and nearby communities recently gathered at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to explore career opportunities in the construction industry during the Construction Zone workforce development event.

Hosted by the Central Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council and the Indiana Careers in Construction Association, the event was held inside the Agriculture and Horticulture Building and provided students with a hands-on introduction to a variety of skilled trades.
Participants were able to interact directly with industry professionals, learn about apprenticeship opportunities, and gain insight into the wide range of career paths available in the union construction sector.
Organizers designed the Construction Zone event to give students practical experience and direct interaction with industry representatives. Through demonstrations and activities, students explored several trades while learning about the training and career progression associated with each field.
The event is considered one of the largest workforce development initiatives in the state aimed at promoting careers in construction.
“Investing in workforce development programs like the Construction Zone provides students with more than an introduction to the construction trades,” says Jon Hooker, President of the Central Indiana Building & Construction Trades Council. “It provides them with a direct path to a rewarding lifelong career and an introduction to some of our top employers.”
The program also allowed employers to connect with students who have already shown interest in the construction industry, creating an early recruitment pipeline for the region’s workforce needs.
Despite strong growth in union membership and apprenticeship participation across the country, industry leaders say construction companies continue to face challenges finding qualified workers.
According to the North America’s Building Trades Unions, apprenticeship enrollment in the building trades has reached record levels nationally. However, demand for skilled labor continues to outpace the number of available workers in many states, including Indiana.
Workforce development events such as Construction Zone are designed to help address this gap by exposing students to career options earlier in their education and encouraging them to consider the skilled trades as a viable career path.
A key highlight of the event was the union construction industry’s earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship model, which provides students with training and real-world job experience while earning wages.
Unlike many traditional college programs, union apprenticeships are self-funded and offered at no tuition cost, allowing participants to develop specialized skills without accumulating student debt.

Through a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, apprentices may also earn an associate degree in applied science while completing their apprenticeship training.
"Our goal is to ensure that the event will be educational and inspiring for students navigating their next steps after high school," says Lynn Busby, Director of Community Outreach for the Indiana Careers in Construction Association. “We want to be the conduit that assists students interested in exploring a career in construction.”
Organizers say events like Construction Zone help bridge the gap between education and employment by connecting students with unions, contractors, and training programs early in their career planning process.
By highlighting hands-on opportunities, career stability, and strong earning potential, the program aims to encourage more young people to pursue careers in construction and help ensure the industry has a skilled workforce for future infrastructure and development projects.
