Contractor Killed in Highway 610 Construction Zone in Maple Grove

A tragic construction incident occurred Thursday afternoon in Maple Grove, Minnesota, when a contractor was fatally struck by a dump truck in a closed construction zone on eastbound Highway 610 near Maple Grove Parkway.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the fatal incident took place just before 2 p.m. “State troopers responded immediately to a construction zone on Highway 610 and Maple Grove Parkway for a fatal incident,” officials said. “A contractor was walking when he was fatally hit by a dump truck.”

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The crash occurred entirely within a closed construction area, emphasizing the dangers that workers face even in restricted zones.

“All eastbound lanes of Highway 610 between I-94 and Maple Grove Parkway will remain closed until approximately 6 p.m.,” the Minnesota Department of Transportation reported, citing safety concerns and ongoing investigative work.

This incident follows a similarly tragic event just one day earlier, when a contractor in Burnsville was killed after being struck by a vehicle equipped with a boom attachment along I-35W, highlighting a concerning trend in construction site safety across Minnesota.

Construction experts and safety advocates note that even controlled zones pose serious risks. “Construction zones are inherently dangerous, and fatalities like this remind us of the need for constant vigilance, proper training, and strict adherence to safety protocols,” said a spokesperson from the Minnesota Construction Safety Association.

Authorities continue to investigate the Maple Grove crash, working to determine exactly how the incident occurred and whether additional safety measures could prevent future tragedies. The investigation will include a review of worksite practices, vehicle operations, and construction zone protocols.

For the community and construction workers across Minnesota, these back-to-back fatalities underscore the ongoing importance of enhanced safety standards, situational awareness, and protective barriers in areas where heavy machinery is in operation.
