Crane Collapse During High Winds Kills Two at Florida Hospital Construction Site

Two construction workers tragically lost their lives Wednesday when a large crane collapsed amid strong winds at the site of a new hospital in Cape Canaveral, located on Merritt Island along Florida’s Space Coast.

The incident occurred in the afternoon during a severe weather event characterized by heavy rain and gusty winds. The crane toppled across the construction zone, crushing a work truck and causing damage to part of the hospital’s roof. Rescue teams pulled the injured workers from the debris and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Following the accident, all work at the site has been halted.
“This was a serious weather-related incident,” said Lance Skelly, spokesperson for Health First, the healthcare company overseeing the hospital project. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families, loved ones and all those affected.”
According to the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, a special weather statement was in effect warning residents and workers of the severe conditions. Winds reached speeds of up to 55 miles per hour as a line of storms moved through Merritt Island that afternoon, urging people to seek shelter in sturdy structures.
Gilbane Building, the construction management company on the project, confirmed the victims were trade workers — one employed by Baker Concrete and the other by a different subcontractor. Their names have not been publicly released.
A local business owner described the afternoon’s weather as “particularly strong” winds, as reported by Florida Today. Authorities are actively investigating the precise cause of the crane collapse, including whether weather conditions played the predominant role.
“We are supporting our trade contractors and working with authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Gilbane stated in a press release.
The construction site remains closed as officials conduct a thorough investigation to determine how the tragedy occurred and to review site safety protocols.
This devastating event highlights the dangers construction workers face during severe weather conditions, especially when operating heavy equipment. Industry experts stress the importance of strict weather monitoring and safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Health First and Gilbane have pledged to cooperate fully with investigators and to provide support to the affected families during this difficult time.
