Crozet Roundabout Project Begins

CROZET, Va. — Construction has officially begun on a major infrastructure improvement at the busy intersection of Routes 240 and 250 in Crozet. The long-awaited project, which has been in the planning pipeline for years, will bring a new roundabout and a new bridge over Lickinghole Creek — improvements local residents and commuters hope will ease traffic congestion and improve safety for years to come.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed that while initial prep work has kept traffic flowing, drivers should expect overnight work to ramp up starting tonight. To keep crews and drivers safe, a detour will redirect traffic during key construction phases.

“We want to make sure people are aware while driving through that area that our work crews are safe — to reduce your speeds and to be vigilant in that area,” said Alexis Mehretab, VDOT’s communications manager.

What Drivers Should Expect

Under the current timeline, the detour will stay in place through December 2025. While that means a temporary inconvenience for drivers, VDOT officials say it’s a crucial step to safely replace the aging bridge and construct the new traffic circle.

The entire project is on track for completion by August 2026, weather permitting.

Recognizing how vital the intersection is for daily commuters traveling between Charlottesville, Crozet, and surrounding Albemarle County communities, VDOT says minimizing disruption is a priority.

“We know how important this corridor is to local residents, businesses, and travelers,” Mehretab added. “We’re working hard to keep this project on schedule so we can reopen lanes and remove detours as soon as possible.”

Safety Comes First

The busy junction has long been a trouble spot for backups, fender benders, and driver confusion. The new roundabout is designed to reduce delays, improve traffic flow, and lower the risk of high-speed collisions that often occur at signalized intersections.

In addition to the traffic circle and bridge replacement, crews will update drainage systems and make other roadway improvements to handle heavier volumes of traffic.

VDOT is reminding everyone traveling through the work zone to slow down and remain alert, especially during overnight construction hours when crews and heavy equipment will be active.

How to Stay Updated

Local residents can follow the project’s progress and get updated detour maps and traffic alerts through the VDOT website and social media pages. Officials also encourage drivers to plan alternate routes if possible and add extra time to their commutes.
