AMES, Iowa — Work is steadily moving forward on CYTown, the highly anticipated mixed-use development that will connect Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
The project, which broke ground in April, is envisioned as a vibrant gathering hub for both the Iowa State University community and residents of central Iowa. At its heart will be the McFarland Clinic, a three-story, 78,000-square-foot medical facility expected to open in late 2026. The clinic will include a range of healthcare services, from urgent care and pediatrics to specialized treatment areas.
"We know that there is an access need for additional providers," said Jenni Talbott of McFarland Clinic. "The care and the services continue to grow and expand. And so we hope to meet that need by being able to offer more space."
The McFarland Clinic is the first of eight planned buildings for the district. Once complete, CYTown will feature a blend of restaurants, retail spaces, an outdoor amphitheater, and eventually a hotel, creating a multipurpose district that aims to redefine Ames’ entertainment and social scene.
"It's going to be a tremendous opportunity for not only the Iowa State community, but Ames and central Iowa to come together as well and really use the multipurpose district for what it would be intended for," said Nick Joos, Iowa State senior associate athletics director.
On Friday, construction crews were seen making steady progress, working both on the clinic building and the surrounding parking infrastructure.
"We're making really good progress and we're really excited about what this project is going to do, not only for Iowa State but for Ames and for central Iowa as well," Joos said.
When fully complete in 2027, CYTown is expected to not only serve students and fans but also provide a new economic and cultural anchor for Ames. The project represents a significant investment in the community, with the potential to attract visitors year-round through healthcare, retail, dining, and entertainment.
City officials and university leaders believe CYTown will spark new growth opportunities, linking campus activity with the broader Ames business community while providing a new destination district for residents and visitors alike.
