DOE Launches $100M Critical Minerals Workforce Initiative to Expand U.S. Talent Pipeline

PROSPECT Targets Critical Minerals Workforce Gaps

Workforce shortages in mining and mineral processing are emerging as a constraint on U.S. efforts to expand domestic critical mineral supply chains, prompting the U.S. Department of Energy to establish a new education and training initiative.

DOE's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation announced Aug. 7 a Notice of Intent for up to $100 million for the Providing Opportunities for Specialized Education in Critical Technologies, or PROSPECT, program.

The initiative will focus on developing workers for activities spanning domestic mineral production, processing, recovery and recycling. DOE intends to increase the number of graduates with degrees related to mining, minerals and associated supply chain technologies, with a goal of doubling those graduates within two years.

Education Programs to Receive Workforce Support

PROSPECT is expected to provide support for scholarships, financial assistance and other programs aimed at expanding higher education opportunities in critical minerals and related technical disciplines.

The initiative also calls for development of new curricula and teaching tools, along with incentives designed to encourage continued growth in these fields.

DOE estimates that the U.S. mining industry will require approximately 6,000 new engineers over the next decade. Additional workforce shortages in materials science, mineral processing and recycling are also affecting the broader critical minerals supply chain.

Workforce Capacity Linked to Domestic Supply Chains

Critical minerals support a range of energy, manufacturing and defense applications, making workforce availability an important component of domestic supply chain development.

For construction and industrial stakeholders, expanded training in mining, processing and related engineering disciplines could support the labor pool required for mineral production and processing facilities. The program also connects higher education workforce development with broader investment in domestic critical minerals infrastructure.

DOE said PROSPECT is intended to build the technical workforce needed to support domestic mineral resources while expanding educational pathways into mining and related industries.
