Georgia Tech has added a major athletics facility focused on training, athlete health and performance analytics, expanding the university's campus infrastructure for its student-athletes. DPR Construction delivered the Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center, which officially opened in May 2026 following approximately two and a half years of construction.
The four-story facility exceeds 100,000 square feet and occupies the northeast corner of Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. The building provides dedicated areas for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, recovery and student-athlete support, along with meeting and office space for Georgia Tech football.
A central component is Georgia Tech's first sports science laboratory. The facility uses markerless motion-capture cameras, force plates and a split-belt treadmill with gait analysis capabilities to collect performance information for athletic training and evaluation.
The performance center also includes more than 17,000 square feet of recovery and training space, 32 fully equipped weight racks and four hydrotherapy pools. A 178-seat all-team meeting room provides additional space for team activities and collaboration.
Sustainability measures were incorporated into the building's design and construction. Structural steel removed from a demolished portion of Bobby Dodd Stadium was repurposed in the new facility, while cross-laminated mass timber was incorporated into the structure and interior design.
The project was designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative and constructed by DPR Construction. Georgia Tech broke ground on the facility in February 2024, and the project reached its topping-out milestone in March 2025 before opening in May 2026.
The completed facility consolidates athletic training, health services and performance analytics in a single campus building. For higher education owners and construction teams, the project demonstrates how athletic capital projects can combine specialized technology, athlete support functions and material-reuse strategies within a large campus facility.
The Fanning Center adds specialized athletics infrastructure while incorporating technology and sustainability features into a higher education project. Its sports science laboratory, recovery facilities and training areas provide Georgia Tech with dedicated resources for athlete performance and health, while the reuse of stadium steel reduces the need for new structural material in portions of the building.
