Community-focused redevelopment projects continue to transform historic buildings into workforce and economic development assets. DPR Construction has completed Sparkhouse Uptown, a new creative opportunity center in Charlotte that repurposes a historic commercial property into a hub for entrepreneurship, workforce development and community programming.
Located at 500 N. Tryon Street, Sparkhouse Uptown occupies a renovated 20,000-square-foot automobile showroom originally built in 1921.
The three-level facility includes coworking areas, a community coffee shop, entrepreneurship support services, innovation and technology labs, digital media production space, screen-printing equipment and showroom facilities designed to support entrepreneurs, students and creative professionals.
DPR adopted a design-to-build delivery approach to enhance project coordination and predictability during construction.
DPR self-performed several construction activities, including deconstruction, concrete work, electrical installation, framing, drywall and doors, frames and hardware.
The project was developed through a collaboration among nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, healthcare providers, corporate partners and local foundations to expand access to workforce development and business resources within Charlotte.
For construction owners, developers and adaptive reuse specialists, projects like Sparkhouse Uptown demonstrate how existing commercial buildings can be repositioned to support workforce development, entrepreneurship and neighborhood revitalization.
