Utility owners and contractors across the Southeast continue expanding workforce development efforts as infrastructure replacement and utility expansion programs increase demand for skilled underground construction labor.
Drake State Community and Technical College and Huntsville Utilities recently completed the first session of a new Underground Utilities Course designed to prepare workers for careers in underground utility construction and operations. The training initiative combines classroom instruction with field-based demonstrations focused on utility installation and maintenance practices.
The three-week program provided students with training related to underground water and natural gas systems, along with instruction covering equipment operation, traffic control procedures and jobsite safety practices.
Participants also earned industry-recognized certifications connected to underground utility operations. Organizers said the program was structured to create a workforce pathway for students entering utility and infrastructure-related trades.
The inaugural class concluded with a hands-on demonstration event showcasing field skills developed during the training course.
Program leaders said the initiative was developed in response to ongoing demand for qualified workers supporting underground infrastructure construction and utility operations throughout the Huntsville region.
Utility owners and contractors continue facing workforce shortages across water, wastewater, gas and telecom infrastructure sectors as municipalities and utility providers advance system expansion and replacement programs.
Training partnerships between community colleges and utility operators have become increasingly common as infrastructure investment programs accelerate and competition for skilled craft labor intensifies.
For utility owners, contractors and infrastructure developers, workforce programs tied directly to underground utility operations can help strengthen labor pipelines for critical infrastructure projects.
The Drake State and Huntsville Utilities partnership also reflects broader industry efforts to connect workforce training with regional infrastructure needs, particularly in fast-growing markets where utility construction activity continues to expand.
