Growing demand for biologics manufacturing is driving continued investment in specialized production facilities, creating opportunities for design-build firms and contractors with experience in highly controlled environments. Elanco Animal Health has completed a major expansion at its Elwood, Kansas, manufacturing campus, adding 25,000 square feet and substantially increasing production capacity.
The $120 million project expands the Elwood facility with new upstream and downstream processing equipment intended to increase manufacturing capacity by more than four times. The expansion also adds a pilot plant to support process development and provide materials for clinical testing.
A new quality control laboratory and additional support spaces were included in the project. The expanded facility currently supports production of Elanco's monoclonal antibody products, including Befrena and Trutect.
Elanco recently began a phased launch of Befrena, an anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody injection for dogs with allergic and atopic dermatitis. Trutect, formerly known as Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody, received full approval in 2025.
The Elwood expansion was completed on schedule, according to the project announcement. Burns & McDonnell served as the primary provider of integrated design and construction services.
Elanco has also committed another $30 million through 2028 for additional warehousing. That work would bring the planned investment at the Elwood site to $150 million.
The project illustrates the construction requirements associated with expanding advanced manufacturing operations. Specialized processing systems, laboratory space, quality controls and supporting logistics infrastructure can require coordinated design and construction delivery to maintain facility operations and meet production requirements.
The Elwood investment demonstrates continued capital spending on specialized manufacturing infrastructure, particularly where production requires controlled processing and laboratory capabilities. For construction owners and delivery teams, projects of this type require coordination among building systems, process equipment, laboratory functions and future capacity needs.
The planned warehouse investment also provides a longer-term construction component at the Kansas site, extending the facility's expansion program beyond the completed manufacturing work.
