CALGARY, Alberta — Enbridge Inc. has received federal approval for its $4 billion Sunrise Expansion Program, a major natural gas infrastructure project aimed at increasing capacity and strengthening energy security in British Columbia.

The Canadian government approved the expansion of Enbridge’s Westcoast pipeline system, clearing the way for construction to begin in July 2026. The project is expected to be operational by late 2028.
The Sunrise Expansion Program will add approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity to the southern portion of the system, helping meet peak demand across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
The expansion includes new pipeline segments, additional compression facilities and upgrades to existing infrastructure along the Westcoast system, which currently spans more than 2,900 kilometers.
Once completed, the project is expected to contribute more than $3 billion to Canada’s economy and create approximately 2,500 construction jobs. Enbridge said it has already spent over $52 million on procurement and hiring from Indigenous-owned businesses, underscoring its commitment to local and regional partnerships.
“The multi-billion dollar Sunrise Expansion Program is a shovel-ready, critical natural gas infrastructure project that supports the advancement of Canada’s energy superpower ambitions,” said Greg Ebel, Enbridge’s president and CEO. “We’re proud of our long history investing and building in Canada and British Columbia, and are excited about the role this project will play in increasing economic prosperity and energy security.”
Canadian officials emphasized the project’s role in supporting economic growth, energy reliability and international trade opportunities.
“Our commitment to Canadians was to get projects approved and built — and with today’s approval of the Sunrise Expansion Program, we’re doing just that,” said The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Canada’s minister of energy and natural resources. “This project will enable us to heat more homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools, while bolstering British Columbian industry.”

British Columbia Premier David Eby also highlighted the project’s economic benefits, noting its potential to create jobs and support key industries during a period of global uncertainty.
Enbridge executives said the company will continue to collaborate with Indigenous communities, contractors and other stakeholders throughout the construction process. The firm also plans to source pipeline materials from Canadian supplier InterPro Pipe + Steel, supporting domestic manufacturing and supply chains.
The Westcoast pipeline system plays a critical role in delivering natural gas used for heating, power generation and industrial applications, as well as supporting liquefied natural gas exports.
As energy demand continues to grow, particularly during peak periods, projects like the Sunrise Expansion are expected to play an increasingly important role in maintaining supply reliability and affordability across the region.
