ZEELAND, Mich. — EV Construction used an active healthcare construction project to give children an inside look at the construction industry through its 2026 Future Builders event, highlighting the industry's continuing effort to introduce young people to skilled trades and construction careers.
Held Aug. 11 at the future Holland Hospital Westpark Specialty Center, the event brought together children of EV employees, trade partners and Holland Hospital team members. The program combined jobsite safety education with hands-on activities designed to demonstrate how construction projects are built and the technologies used by modern construction teams.
Before entering the project area, participants were equipped with hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility shirts and gloves. Construction activities were paused for the event, allowing children to explore the site in a controlled environment.
The activities included an obstacle course, painting station and guided project tours. Participants also experienced construction technology through a virtual reality demonstration and a layout robot demonstration showing how robotic equipment can print site plans directly onto a concrete slab.
Children also had opportunities to ride a scissor lift, operate remote-controlled equipment and work with a full-size excavator. The activities provided an accessible introduction to equipment operation, project layout and the range of technologies now used on construction sites.
The Future Builders program comes as contractors continue to focus on developing the next generation of construction workers. Exposure to construction at an early age can help young people understand the range of career paths available across skilled trades, project management, safety, technology and other construction disciplines.
For contractors and construction owners, programs that connect families and young people with the industry can complement broader workforce-development strategies. Hands-on experiences also provide an opportunity to demonstrate that construction careers extend beyond traditional field roles and increasingly incorporate digital tools, robotics and other technologies.
EV Construction's event also underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous safety practices when introducing young people to construction environments. By providing PPE, suspending active work and organizing controlled activities, the company created an environment where participants could experience a project site while learning about the safety expectations followed by construction crews.
The 2026 Future Builders event builds on EV Construction's previous efforts to expose children to construction careers and reinforce the industry's need to develop a future workforce capable of supporting continued construction activity.
