Findorff Construction has officially launched work on a $95 million concourse redevelopment at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE), one of the most significant capital projects at the airport in decades.
The Madison-based contractor began demolition of the dormant Concourse E earlier this month, paving the way for a state-of-the-art facility designed to boost international and domestic air travel capacity. Completion is expected in late 2027, according to a Sept. 16 announcement.
The redevelopment will replace the aging International Arrivals Terminal, which is currently separate from the airport’s main terminal. Once complete, the new Concourse E will streamline operations by allowing airlines to manage international and domestic flights from the same gates. The design will include two jet bridges capable of processing up to 400 international passengers per hour — nearly triple the airport’s current capacity.
Airport leadership emphasized how the project will improve both efficiency and the traveler experience.
“The new Concourse E will improve efficiency for international operations, since airlines will handle international and domestic arrivals and departures from the same gate, rather than towing aircraft from the International Arrivals Terminal to the Main Terminal,” said Brian Dranzik, Milwaukee County airport director. “The new concourse will also be environmentally friendly, have a modern U.S. customs facility and bring MKE’s passenger experience to an even higher level.”
The project also comes with a strong financial model designed to minimize taxpayer impact. According to county officials, funding will be derived from airport revenue, bonding, and $13.5 million in federal support.
“This project will set the stage for expanded international connections and economic opportunity for our region,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Best of all, this project will not use a single property tax dollar.”
Concourse E, originally opened in 1969, has remained dormant since 2017 after airline consolidation left the airport with just two active concourses. The modernization effort is expected to enhance MKE’s competitiveness, attract new airlines, and strengthen Milwaukee’s position as a hub for international travel in the Midwest.
Beyond the operational upgrades, local leaders highlight that the redevelopment will generate hundreds of construction jobs, spur tourism growth, and provide long-term economic benefits by positioning the region for increased global connectivity.
Once completed in 2027, the new facility will feature sustainable design elements, an upgraded U.S. Customs and Border Protection area, and modern passenger amenities — ensuring the airport can meet the demands of both domestic and international travelers well into the future.
