A major Northern California highway improvement project has received state recognition for its project delivery collaboration after reaching completion and opening to traffic. The I-80 Yolo Corridor Improvements project earned a Gold Partnering Award from Caltrans in the category for projects exceeding $50 million.
The project provides additional express-lane capacity along the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and Davis while incorporating technology and infrastructure upgrades intended to support traffic operations.
The project added approximately 10 miles of tolled express lanes along I-80. The improvements are intended to address congestion and travel-time issues while supporting transit reliability and corridor mobility.
Construction also included new pavement, upgrades to existing bicycle and pedestrian paths and improvements to intelligent transportation systems.
The technology package includes fiber-optic infrastructure, vehicle-detection equipment and changeable message signs. These systems provide additional tools for traffic management and incident response along the corridor.
Construction quantities included more than 112,000 cubic yards of concrete and 212,000 tons of asphalt.
The work was carried out while maintaining operations on one of Northern California's key transportation routes. Crews used continuous nighttime lane reductions on eastbound I-80 to limit construction effects on daytime traffic.
The corridor includes the Yolo Causeway, a transportation connection that dates to its original opening in 1916. The causeway remains an important link between the Sacramento and Davis areas.
With construction complete, the improved corridor is open to traffic and includes the new express-lane capacity and supporting infrastructure.
The I-80 Yolo Corridor project demonstrates the construction requirements involved in upgrading heavily traveled highway infrastructure while keeping traffic moving. The combination of roadway reconstruction, express lanes, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and intelligent transportation systems required coordinated work across multiple infrastructure components.
The Caltrans Gold Partnering Award also recognizes the collaborative project-delivery effort associated with completing the work on a major operating transportation corridor.
