New Building to Expand Medical Training Capacity

Expanding medical education infrastructure can help universities accommodate larger student cohorts and support the development of the health care workforce. Flintco has broken ground on a new interdisciplinary building for the University of Tennessee Health Sciences College of Medicine in Memphis, marking a major investment in the institution's educational facilities.

The project is intended to provide modern, technology-equipped spaces for medical education and interdisciplinary learning. The development will support the university's plans to increase enrolment in its Doctor of Medicine program and Physician Assistant program.

According to Flintco, the facility represents the largest state-funded higher education building project in Tennessee history. The groundbreaking was announced Oct. 15, 2026.

Medical Programs Set for Increased Capacity

The new building is designed to accommodate changes in the university's medical training programmes. The College of Medicine plans to increase its annual MD student intake from 175 to 225, while the Physician Assistant program is expected to grow from 30 to 60 students per cohort.

The facility will incorporate technology-rich learning environments intended to support collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary education. The expanded space is expected to help the institution accommodate its planned enrolment growth.

Flintco is working with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences and design partners brg3s and HOK on the project. The announcement did not disclose the construction budget, building area or expected completion date.

Higher Education Construction Supports Health Care Workforce Development

The project connects investment in higher education facilities with plans to expand professional training capacity. For construction owners and contractors, specialised academic buildings require coordination between educational institutions, designers and construction teams to support technical requirements and evolving teaching methods.

The Memphis development will add educational infrastructure for medical and physician assistant training as the university pursues larger student cohorts. Its scale and state funding designation also make it a significant higher education construction project in Tennessee.
