Highlights

  • Florida’s Turnpike Mainline widening program represents more than $20 billion in planned transportation investment.
  • The 320-mile corridor is being expanded to six or more lanes along its full length.
  • The program is expected to add more than 965 lane miles of capacity.
  • Nearly $8.5 million is being directed toward improvements at six Turnpike service plazas.
  • FDOT is investing $53.8 million to expand and improve nearly 150 truck parking spaces.

A multiyear transportation program is expanding capacity across one of Florida’s primary north-south freight and passenger corridors, with the state’s Turnpike Mainline widening initiative now 55% complete. The program covers the 320-mile route from South Florida through Central Florida to Interstate 75 in Wildwood and represents more than $20 billion in planned investment.

Turnpike Widening Adds Major Roadway Capacity

The Florida Department of Transportation is planning to expand every section of the Turnpike Mainline to six or more lanes. Once completed, the program is expected to add more than 965 lane miles of capacity across the system.

FDOT has already added 384 lane miles across Florida’s Turnpike System, including 179 lane miles on the Mainline. Recent projects include the widening between State Road 50 in Clermont and Hancock Road in Minneola, which was completed in June 2026.

In Miami-Dade County, widening from the Dolphin Expressway to Northwest 106th Street was completed in February 2024. The subsequent section extending from Northwest 106th Street to I-75 has also recently opened to traffic.

The scale of the program creates continued construction activity involving roadway widening, capacity improvements and associated transportation infrastructure along multiple sections of the statewide corridor.

Service Plaza and Truck Parking Improvements

Beyond the mainline construction program, Florida is investing nearly $8.5 million in improvements at six Turnpike service plazas. The work includes upgraded food, retail and customer-service offerings across 19 restaurant and retail locations.

FDOT is also allocating $53.8 million for improvements at the Turkey Lake and Ocoee service plazas. The project will expand and improve nearly 150 truck parking spaces, providing additional parking capacity for commercial drivers using the Turnpike.

The truck parking investment also supports freight movement along the corridor by expanding facilities serving commercial traffic.

Why It Matters

The Turnpike program represents a substantial pipeline of transportation construction work across Florida, spanning roadway capacity expansion, service-area improvements and freight-support infrastructure.

For contractors and suppliers, the breadth of the program indicates continued demand for roadway construction and related infrastructure work as additional sections move through construction. For owners and developers, expanded highway capacity and improved truck facilities are relevant to transportation access and freight connectivity across major Florida markets.
