
Early engineering work is advancing on a major petrochemical expansion in Bahrain as Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) moves forward with plans to add aromatics production capacity. Fluor has been awarded the front-end engineering and design contract for the proposed facility, marking the next step toward the project's development.
Under the contract, Fluor will deliver front-end engineering and design services for a new aromatics plant at GPIC's existing industrial complex in Sitra, Kingdom of Bahrain.
The expansion is intended to complement the site's current ammonia, urea and methanol production while broadening its petrochemical manufacturing capabilities.
Front-end engineering and design establishes the technical scope, project definition, cost estimates and execution strategy before procurement and construction activities begin.
According to project details, the proposed facility is expected to produce approximately 1.2 million metric tons of paraxylene and 500,000 metric tons of benzene each year.
Both products serve as key feedstocks for the manufacture of plastics, polyester fibers and packaging materials used across consumer and industrial markets.
The project will incorporate commercially established process technologies designed for large-scale petrochemical production.
FEED contracts represent a critical milestone for capital-intensive industrial developments because they establish project scope, engineering requirements and execution plans before construction decisions are made.
