BEND, Ore. — Drivers traveling through Franklin Avenue should brace for a major change in traffic flow next month, as detours shift direction to accommodate the next phase of construction.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 3, the current one-way pattern on Franklin Avenue between Fourth Street and Eighth Street will switch directions, according to the City of Bend. The eastbound lane will reopen, while westbound traffic will be closed, effectively reversing the current flow. This temporary setup is expected to remain in place through early December.

The switch is part of the Franklin Avenue Improvements Project, a multi-phase effort designed to modernize road infrastructure and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Construction crews will shift work to the north side of the roadway and surrounding areas, necessitating the closure.

Despite the detours, access to local businesses and residential driveways will remain open, and the city plans to install clear signage to help guide motorists through the construction zone.

"We appreciate the public's patience as we move into this next phase of the Franklin Avenue Improvement project," said Todd Johnson, Senior Project Engineer with the City of Bend Engineering Department. “This project will improve safety for all users. As always, we urge drivers to slow down, pay attention to signage, and allow for extra time when traveling through the work zone."

City officials also noted that, weather permitting, the overall project is ahead of schedule and could reach substantial completion by early December, offering relief to residents who have navigated various closures throughout the year.

The Franklin Avenue corridor serves as a key Midtown connection, meaning drivers should prepare for delays and longer travel times, particularly during morning and evening commute hours. Local businesses are urging customers to continue supporting shops and services in the area, reminding the public that access will remain open despite lane restrictions.
