BEND, Ore.,— Drivers traveling through Bend’s Midtown district should prepare for new traffic changes next week. Beginning Monday, Nov. 3, the traffic direction on Franklin Avenue between Fourth Street and Eighth Street will temporarily reverse as crews continue the final phase of the Franklin Avenue Improvements project.

Under the new configuration, eastbound travel will open while westbound lanes temporarily close. City officials said the shift is essential to allow contractors to complete construction on the north side of the corridor along with other remaining upgrades. The temporary setup is expected to remain in place through early December.
Despite the detour, access to nearby businesses, residences, and community services will remain open. Clear signage and wayfinding will help drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safely navigate active work zones.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we move into this next phase of the Franklin Avenue Improvement project,” said Todd Johnson, Senior Project Engineer with the City of Bend Engineering Department. “This project will improve safety for all users. As always, we urge drivers to slow down, pay attention to signage, and allow for extra time when traveling through the work zone”.

City officials noted that the overall project is running ahead of schedule, and—pending favorable weather—construction is projected to wrap up in early December.
The Franklin Avenue Improvements project is part of a broader initiative to enhance Midtown connectivity by improving pedestrian crossings, updating roadway infrastructure, and increasing safety near schools, businesses, and residential areas. Work includes upgraded sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, bike enhancements, new utility line installations, and better lighting and traffic flow improvements.
The traffic switch allows crews to complete the last structural and paving elements without extended closures later this winter.
Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time, especially during peak morning and afternoon hours. The City is reminding drivers that posted detour routes must be followed to reduce congestion in neighborhoods not designed for pass-through traffic.
