The Freeman Arts Pavilion, a beloved venue for artists from around the world and across various genres, is embarking on a transformative project to build a larger, permanent stage. For years, the venue has operated with a mobile stage that, while functional, was limited in size and lacked the permanent facilities needed to host top-tier performers. Now, the Freeman Arts Foundation is investing in a new, expansive stage that promises to elevate the overall experience for both artists and audiences alike.

Patti Grimes, executive director of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm for the changes: “Today, when world class artists come on tour to Freeman Arts Pavilion, we have green tents behind our stage. We're really just thrilled to be able to host our artists with permanent back of the house facilities as well as this great stage.”
The new stage, which will measure approximately 100 feet by 40 feet, will be a significant upgrade, doubling the current stage size. However, Grimes emphasized that the construction will take time, with the venue remaining open and operational throughout the process.
“It will take multiple years and so when patrons come to Freeman Arts Pavilion in 2025, when they look to their right, they'll be able to see the new stage coming out of the ground," Grimes explained. "We're committed to making sure the Pavilion continues to be a hub for arts and culture in our community, even during construction.”
The Freeman Arts Pavilion is known for its diverse programming, regularly featuring a mix of local talent and nationally recognized performers. Artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Trombone Shorty, and Lyle Lovett have graced its stage, drawing significant crowds from the local community and beyond. Grimes noted that these national acts are a key draw for visitors, especially as they offer top-tier performances without requiring long travel.
“Since 2010, we have had national recording artists grace our stage," Grimes said. "So, many people love coming to see our national recording artist because you don't have to travel two to three hours.”
The Pavilion has become a central part of the region’s cultural scene, serving over 100,000 arts enthusiasts each year. Recently, it marked a major milestone by celebrating its one millionth attendee. This achievement reflects the venue's growing popularity and its impact on the local arts community.
With the new stage in development, the Freeman Arts Pavilion is poised to become an even more important venue for both local and national acts. The permanent stage and upgraded facilities will not only enhance the performance experience for visiting artists but will also allow the Pavilion to continue attracting top-tier talent while further cementing its role as a cultural cornerstone for the community.
The project is expected to be completed over several years, with ongoing performances and events taking place in the interim. The Freeman Arts Foundation remains committed to bringing high-quality arts experiences to the region and looks forward to unveiling the new stage as part of its continued growth.
