Lead

A new middle school project in Sarasota, Florida, is moving into construction with plans to expand capacity for a bilingual public charter school and accommodate approximately 600 students. Gilbane Building has begun work on the $23 million Dreamers Academy Middle School following a groundbreaking ceremony held Oct. 5.

Middle School Construction Program

The 49,500-square-foot facility will expand Dreamers Academy's existing K-5 campus and provide space for its middle school program, including fifth-grade students transitioning from the current campus.

The building will include classrooms, administrative offices, a full kitchen and a gymnasium. Outdoor facilities are planned to include a soccer field, basketball courts and a play area.

The site will also receive new parking and a dedicated student drop-off lane intended to support daily campus circulation.

Site Infrastructure and Future Campus Plans

Construction work extends beyond the school building. The project includes improvements to an existing turn lane, installation of a new lift station and extensions of public utilities serving the campus.

The development follows Gilbane's earlier work on the school's K-5 phase. Future campus plans include an Early Learning Center, Family Resource Center and medical clinic, although those facilities are separate from the current middle school construction scope.

The new school is scheduled to open in August 2027 for the 2027-28 academic year.

Why It Matters

The project adds new K-12 capacity in Sarasota while combining classroom space with supporting athletic, transportation and utility infrastructure. For construction stakeholders, the development also illustrates the broader scope required for school expansions, where building work can involve site circulation, utility upgrades and supporting campus facilities alongside the primary educational building.
