School districts facing enrollment growth are investing in additional classroom capacity while upgrading existing campuses to support modern educational programs. Gilbane Building has completed a classroom expansion at South Douglas Elementary School in Douglasville, Georgia, adding 14 classrooms and improving supporting campus infrastructure.
The 18,542-square-foot addition provides additional learning space for students at South Douglas Elementary School. The project was delivered for Douglas County School System, with Gilbane Building providing construction management services and Goodwyn Mills Cawood serving as the design partner.
Beyond the classrooms, the work included expanded parking and changes to traffic circulation. Infrastructure improvements were incorporated into the existing campus to improve access for students, staff and visitors.
The new classroom space provides the school with additional capacity while integrating the addition with the existing facility.
Project coordination was a key component of the work because construction took place while the existing school campus remained operational.
Gilbane Building coordinated with the school district, design team, trade partners and other project stakeholders to maintain safety and limit disruption to school activities. The approach allowed construction activities to proceed while students and staff continued using the campus.
