ALLENDALE, Mich. — A renovated student-services facility at Grand Valley State University is providing updated technology, interior spaces and student-facing amenities following the completion of work led by Granger Construction.
The renovation transformed portions of the Lubbers Student Services Center while allowing university operations to continue throughout construction. Granger Construction used phased execution and scheduled portions of the work during early-morning and after-hours periods to limit disruption.
The project included changes to layouts, lighting, staff support areas and meeting spaces. Private one-on-one meeting areas and flexible conference rooms were added as part of the updated student-services environment.
Digital infrastructure was a major component of the renovation. New wayfinding systems and real-time information displays provide access to student records and service information, while electronic queuing technology is designed to organize administrative visits.
The renovated atrium and lobby include interactive media walls displaying information related to student achievements, campus life and the university environment. A redesigned concierge desk provides a central point for assistance and navigation and incorporates a three-dimensional carved wall system.
The first-floor Laker Anchor Room serves as an additional onboarding and recruitment hub for prospective students and their families. The space includes a central reception area and two private meeting rooms equipped with technology for admissions consultations.
Interior finishes throughout the renovated areas include custom wood veneer wall systems and updated lighting and layouts intended to create a consistent environment aligned with GVSU's campus identity.
Renovating an occupied higher-education facility requires coordination between construction activities and ongoing campus operations. Granger Construction's phased approach allowed the Student Services Center to remain operational while the project team completed interior, technology and student-facing improvements.
The completed renovation demonstrates how existing university facilities can be adapted to support changing service-delivery requirements without taking the entire facility offline.
