Granite Completes SR-30 Corridor Upgrade in Logan, Utah

Transportation upgrades that combine roadway safety, multimodal access and utility improvements can significantly change how communities move through growing corridors. Granite has completed the SR-30 Improvement Project in Logan, Utah, delivering a series of roadway and pedestrian improvements along the corridor.

Roadway and Multimodal Improvements

The project transformed an existing two-lane roadway without shoulders by adding 12-foot shoulders, turn lanes, a center median, center barrier and guardrails.

More than 7 miles of new sidewalk and multi-use path were constructed, including a bike path connecting Logan to SR-23. A 320-foot cast-in-place pedestrian tunnel with retaining walls provides a grade-separated crossing beneath SR-30 for pedestrians and cyclists.

Two highway lighting systems were also installed, including improvements at the SR-23 intersection and 3200 West.

Construction quantities included approximately 253,100 cubic yards of imported borrow material and 98,516 tons of asphalt. The asphalt work included traditional hot-mix material and highly modified asphalt used for the final roadway layer.

Construction Challenges at Cutler Marsh

Work within the environmentally sensitive Cutler Marsh area required construction of two precast box culverts while maintaining water flow and protecting surrounding conditions.

Granite used water-control bladders to isolate work areas during dewatering operations. Environmental monitoring included water-condition checks and wildlife and nesting bird surveys during construction.

Another technical component involved placing cement-treated road base beneath new and existing roadway sections. Crews had a four-hour window following mixing to achieve a required 3/8-inch finish tolerance.

Intelligent compaction technology was used to monitor compaction passes, equipment speed and frequency digitally, supporting quality control and project compliance.

The completed SR-30 improvements provide Logan with expanded pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure alongside roadway safety upgrades. For transportation owners and contractors, the project illustrates the coordination required when roadway reconstruction intersects with environmental constraints, drainage infrastructure and multimodal improvements.

The use of intelligent compaction also demonstrates how digital monitoring can support quality control on pavement and road-base operations where tight construction tolerances are required.
