Granite Secures $97 Million Military Project in Guam

Caroline Raffetto

WATSONVILLE, Calif. --- Granite (NYSE:GVA) has announced that its joint venture partnership with Obayashi Corporation has been awarded a $97 million contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) to enhance the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capabilities at Polaris Point, Guam. This contract, which is funded by the Department of Defense (DOD), will contribute to Granite’s first-quarter CAP. As the consolidating partner in the joint venture, Granite will manage the project and oversee its completion.

The project will involve constructing a 17,000 square-foot facility designed to house advanced battery energy storage systems and a microgrid controller. The BESS will be integrated with the existing electrical grid to provide clean, reliable power to future naval facilities, furthering the Navy’s mission to improve sustainability and energy resilience in the Pacific region.

“This project will ensure our continued growth in the Pacific, specifically in Guam," said Curt Haldeman, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations. "It will boost our strategic advantage and enhance our battery energy storage and microgrid portfolio for Granite."

Granite's commitment to advancing innovative solutions that support military operations aligns with the company’s focus on developing cutting-edge infrastructure to support sustainability goals. As a leading player in the construction and materials industry, Granite continues to prioritize delivering high-quality projects that contribute to more sustainable energy systems.

In addition to the primary facility construction, the scope of work includes various site improvements and the integration of advanced technologies to optimize energy management at Polaris Point. This expansion of energy storage infrastructure will significantly contribute to the Navy's efforts to establish more resilient and eco-friendly facilities in the region.

Granite’s participation in this project is a further testament to the company’s leadership in infrastructure development and its expanding presence in the Pacific. The project is expected to begin on March 20, 2025, and be completed by June 2028.
