Granite to Rehabilitate Taxiways at San Francisco International Airport in $26M Project

Granite Construction has secured a significant infrastructure contract at one of the country’s busiest airports. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has awarded the company an approximately $26 million contract to rehabilitate key sections of Taxiway Z and Taxiway S, ensuring the continued operational efficiency and safety of air traffic flow.
Funded directly by SFO, the project will be listed in Granite’s second-quarter committed and awarded projects (CAP). Construction is expected to begin in August 2025, with completion anticipated by November 2025.

Located in a critical area of the airfield, Taxiway Z serves as a major conduit for aircraft traveling between passenger terminals, cargo operations, and airline maintenance facilities. The upgrade aims to modernize these essential corridors in alignment with SFO’s long-term capital strategy.
“We are excited to be part of this critical infrastructure project at SFO,” said Brent Fogg, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations. “Our collaboration with SFO on the Taxiway Z Rehabilitation Project underscores our commitment to delivering exceptional projects and advancing the safety and efficiency of airport operations.”
The project scope is comprehensive and includes:
- Full reconstruction of asphalt concrete pavement
- Replacement of traditional airfield lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting and signage
- A 12kV electrical duct bank upgrade
- New pavement markings and enhanced drainage systems
These upgrades are intended to boost operational reliability, enhance aircraft guidance, and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

The work is part of SFO’s broader Capital Improvement Program (CIP)—a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure initiative that spans runways, taxiways, terminals, and other essential airport systems. The Taxiway Z Rehabilitation is aligned with the airport’s “Delivering Exceptional Projects” initiative, which focuses on transparency, early contractor involvement, and alternative delivery methods.
The partnership also plays into Granite’s longer-term strategy to expand its presence in the aviation infrastructure space. Through its Santa Clara hot mix asphalt plant, Granite will supply over 24,000 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA) to the project site, ensuring high-quality material production and streamlined logistics.
As SFO continues to serve tens of millions of passengers annually, maintaining and upgrading key operational assets like taxiways is crucial to avoiding bottlenecks and preserving safety standards in a post-pandemic travel boom.
