
A $23.7 million roadway rehabilitation project in Glacier National Park will upgrade a key access route while using in-place pavement recycling to limit imported materials and construction-related hauling. Granite Construction has been selected by the Federal Highway Administration's Western Federal Lands Highway Division for the work on Two Medicine Road.
The project will rehabilitate 7.22 miles of Two Medicine Road, the primary access route to the park's Two Medicine area. The work is being delivered through a partnership involving the Federal Highway Administration's Western Federal Lands Highway Division, the National Park Service and the Blackfeet Nation.
Granite's construction scope includes roadway reconstruction and obliteration, crushed surfacing, hot-mix asphalt paving and restoration of parking areas. The project will also include drainage improvements, pavement striping, stream channel restoration and new visitor amenities.
The contract value is approximately $23.7 million and will be included in Granite's third-quarter 2026 backlog.
A central element of the project is full-depth reclamation with cement. The construction method will recycle existing pavement in place rather than requiring all existing roadway material to be removed and replaced with imported material.
The approach can reduce material transportation and associated haul traffic, an important consideration for roadway work within a national park. The project also combines roadway rehabilitation with drainage and stream channel improvements to address broader infrastructure needs along the corridor.
Construction is scheduled to start in fall 2026, with completion expected in late 2027.
Road rehabilitation in environmentally sensitive and heavily visited areas requires coordination between transportation improvements, construction access and resource protection. In-place recycling can help reduce material movements while allowing contractors to reuse existing roadway materials.
For public agencies, owners and transportation contractors, the project demonstrates how pavement rehabilitation, drainage improvements and environmental considerations can be incorporated into a single roadway program.
