Granite Wins First Phase of Parks Highway CMGC Contract in Alaska

WATSONVILLE, Calif. -- Granite (NYSE:GVA) has been awarded a $54 million federally funded contract to undertake the first phase of a two-part Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) project with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF). This significant infrastructure project focuses on realigning the Parks Highway between mileposts 319 and 322, aiming to improve road safety by eliminating hazardous sharp curves.

The scope of work for this phase is extensive and includes moving 2.5 million cubic yards of earth on site, laying 25,000 tons of asphalt paving, and managing a full traffic diversion to minimize disruption during construction. Granite will deploy its comprehensive equipment fleet to support the project, which includes a portable crusher and hot plant to optimize onsite material processing and paving operations. The subsequent segment of the project is valued at approximately $35 million and will follow upon completion of this initial phase.
“By employing the CMGC approach, the project team was able to identify and design a 'best for project' plan that ensures the most efficient use of funding,” said Ryan Moren, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations. “This project sets the standard for collaboration, teamwork and partnering through preconstruction, with DOT&PF, Michael Baker International (Designer), and Granite all actively contributing to an optimal design and successful contract award.”
Construction activities officially commenced on May 1, 2025, with the project scheduled for completion by September 2027. The CMGC delivery method allows Granite to work closely with project stakeholders during preconstruction, fostering transparency and flexibility that help mitigate risks and control costs throughout the project lifecycle.
The Parks Highway realignment is a critical investment in Alaska’s transportation infrastructure, expected to enhance motorist safety, reduce traffic delays, and support regional economic development by improving connectivity along this vital corridor.
