A major renovation of the University of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium is moving forward with Helm Mechanical taking on a significant mechanical construction package as part of the approximately $600 million redevelopment.
The project will modernize the 1923 Lincoln, Nebraska, stadium while maintaining its role as a major venue for the university. Helm is working with Kiewit Building Group on the redevelopment, which will be delivered in phases.
Helm Mechanical’s awarded scope includes HVAC and plumbing systems serving the West Suites and West Lower Bowl, along with HVAC systems in the South Stadium area.
The mechanical work will support renovations across portions of the existing facility as the stadium is converted into a more modern, year-round venue. Coordinating HVAC and plumbing installations within an active stadium renovation will require work to be integrated with the broader phased construction program.
Construction is scheduled to begin after the 2026 football season. Full project completion is targeted for 2028.
The completed redevelopment is expected to provide approximately 80,000 seats while adding 20,000 new chairback seats. Plans also call for a redesigned student section, expanded concourses and upgraded club and premium spaces.
The renovation is centered on extending the functionality of the long-standing stadium while introducing updated amenities and building systems. The phased approach allows construction to proceed around the stadium's ongoing use for university football.
For Helm Mechanical, the project also expands its involvement in Nebraska's institutional construction market. The company has established a presence in the state over recent years, including recognition in ENR Midwest's 2026 Top Specialty Contractors ranking.
The stadium's combination of new spaces, upgraded systems and phased construction creates a substantial coordination requirement for mechanical trades. HVAC and plumbing installations must be integrated with architectural renovations and other building systems across multiple stadium areas.
For owners and contractors, the project demonstrates the role of specialty mechanical contractors in large-scale sports venue renovations, particularly where existing facilities must be upgraded while accommodating future year-round use.
Helm's work will form one part of the broader construction program, with the renovation expected to continue through 2028.
