
The long-term performance of complex public facilities provides construction owners and specialty contractors with insight into how highly coordinated building systems function after project completion. Two years after the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion opened, Hermanson is highlighting its mechanical construction work on the Seattle waterfront facility.
The Ocean Pavilion is a 30,000-square-foot, three-story facility organized around a large aquarium habitat. Hermanson's HVAC scope included the installation of more than 45,000 pounds of galvanized and stainless-steel ductwork.
The project's mechanical systems had to be coordinated with plumbing, fire protection, electrical and life safety infrastructure within a relatively compact building footprint. The systems also support environmental requirements associated with the aquarium habitat while maintaining appropriate conditions for visitors and staff.
Hermanson's detailing, fabrication and field installation activities totaled more than 9,300 hours during project delivery.
Construction coordination extended beyond the Pavilion itself to underground installations and improvements affecting nearby roadways and pedestrian areas.
The project required multiple trades and project partners to sequence work across the building and surrounding infrastructure. The facility opened in August 2024 and has since become part of Seattle's revitalized waterfront area.
Specialty mechanical systems can be particularly demanding in facilities with controlled environments and intensive public use. The Ocean Pavilion demonstrates the need for early coordination between HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical and life safety systems when space is constrained and building operations depend on reliable environmental controls.
