Highway 2 construction near Kalispell to start Monday, expect delays

KALISPELL, Mont. — A major rehabilitation effort on U.S. Highway 2 near Kalispell is set to begin Monday, according to the Montana Department of Transportation. The project will improve about four miles of the highway, stretching from just south of the Rose Crossing intersection to south of the Glacier Park International Airport entrance.
The work, led by MDT in partnership with contractor LHC Inc., will involve several upgrades, including removing and replacing worn pavement, sealing cracks, applying a chip seal and fog seal, and resurfacing the weigh station used by Motor Carrier Services. Additional upgrades include new pavement markings, signage, shoulder rumble strips, roadside delineators, electrical improvements at Birch Grove Road and Rose Crossing, and accessibility improvements in line with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“This corridor experiences significant daily traffic volumes and over time it has become worn down and formed grooves in the driving lanes,” MDT stated in its release. “This project will address wear and tear on the road and extend the service life of this section of the highway.”
Work is expected to continue through fall 2025 and will also include curb ramp improvements at Rose Crossing, and temporary closures of key intersections.
“If you plan on traveling through this project area, for example to the airport, during construction, then please plan ahead and allow for extra travel time,” said Ryan Paulsen, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “Delays are likely, and temporary closures will occur during construction on this project. Additionally, for the safety of the public and the contractor, please slow down and use caution when traveling through the construction zone.”
Throughout the project, at least one lane in each direction will remain open, but travelers should expect reduced speed limits, traffic delays, and potential wide load restrictions. Temporary closures of the Rose Crossing and Birch Grove Road intersections to east/west traffic will occur, though not at the same time, with posted detours provided.
Crews may be working up to six days a week, 24 hours a day, with Sunday work permitted on a case-by-case basis.
