Construction of a major aviation education facility in Tennessee has reached a significant milestone as Hoar Construction completed the structural topping out of Middle Tennessee State University's new flight training center in Shelbyville. The project expands higher education aviation infrastructure while supporting workforce development for the growing aerospace sector.
The $62 million facility is being built at Shelbyville Municipal Airport in Bedford County and is expected to become a long-term hub for flight instruction and aerospace education when completed in spring 2028.
The topping out ceremony marked the placement of the project's final structural beam at the highest point of the 52,000-square-foot building. The event brought together representatives from Middle Tennessee State University, the City of Shelbyville, project partners and public officials to recognize construction progress.
Construction began following the project's groundbreaking in December and continues with Hoar Construction serving as the builder. The facility was planned as part of MTSU's long-term strategy to expand its aerospace education programs while increasing flight training capacity.
Once operational, the center will provide permanent facilities for aviation programs currently operating from temporary buildings at Shelbyville Municipal Airport.
The new aerospace campus is intended to accommodate continued enrollment growth within MTSU's Department of Aerospace while expanding pilot training capabilities.
The department currently includes 20 full-time faculty members, more than 100 flight instructors and over 1,400 students representing multiple states and countries. The Shelbyville facility will complement existing operations at Murfreesboro Airport and strengthen the university's aviation training network.
The project also supports broader workforce needs within the aviation industry by increasing educational capacity for future pilots and aviation professionals.
