Homes Damaged After Construction Blast in Harford County

Caroline Raffetto

HARFORD COUNTY, Md. (WBFF) — A construction-related explosion on Friday afternoon caused damage to multiple homes in a residential area of Harford County, prompting an official investigation and community concern.

According to the Susquehanna Hose Company, emergency crews were dispatched to the Bulle Rock subdivision in Havre de Grace on September 26 after reports of significant shaking and structural impact linked to nearby blasting activity.

Officials confirmed that “there were no injuries,” despite visible damage to several properties. Homeowners in the neighborhood said the force of the blast caused interior and exterior disturbances—ranging from cracked drywall and foundations to broken windows and shifted fixtures.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has been requested to step in and determine whether the blasting followed all safety regulations and permit requirements. Investigators are expected to review the contractor’s blasting protocols, seismic impact records, and any notifications provided to residents in advance.

Nearby residents have expressed frustration and concern over the lack of warning and the force of the explosion. Some homeowners said they initially believed the area had experienced an earthquake before learning it was tied to the construction site.

Expanded Context & Community Impact

The blasting is believed to be connected to a development project in the vicinity of the subdivision. While controlled detonations are sometimes used to clear rock or prepare land for infrastructure, residents say Friday’s blast felt unusually strong and unexpected.

Property owners are now assessing damage with insurance providers while awaiting clarity on who will be held liable. Local officials indicated that contractors responsible for the blasting may be required to cover verified damages if negligence or excessive impact is determined.

Community conversations online have already begun, with many residents calling for increased oversight, stricter enforcement, and better communication about future blasting schedules.

Despite the distress caused, emergency services emphasized that “there were no injuries,” and that all reported damage appears to involve structures rather than people.

The investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office will focus on:

  • Compliance with blasting permits
  • Notification procedures for nearby homeowners
  • Seismic monitoring and safety logs
  • Damage radius and impact threshold

Officials have not yet released the name of the contractor involved or details of the blasting schedule.

More updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
