Construction is underway at Hope Lutheran Church and School in Idaho Falls, where leaders have launched a $3 million project to build a new school facility aimed at supporting a growing student population and modernizing the campus.

The project began last month at the church’s campus on 12th Street and includes construction of a new 8,700-square-foot school building on the east side of the property.
According to church leaders, the expansion will help address increasing enrollment while providing updated classroom space and improved facilities for students and staff.
Pastor Garen Pay said the new building will feature six classrooms designed to support the school’s expanding educational programs.
The project will also include several campus upgrades, including additional parking spaces and improvements to the existing parking lot.
Church officials plan to modify the current building by removing two classroom-dividing walls to create a larger shared area for early childhood education programs.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place during the church’s worship service on Sunday, March 8.
“We’ll stand up and sing a hymn as we walk down there. We’ll do some prayers and blessings and do a (ceremonial turning of the soil) and close our service (at the construction site),” Pay says.
The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be open to members of the community.
Church leaders say the expansion was prompted by multiple factors, including a growing number of students and updated regulations that limit how many students can be in a confined space.
The existing building, constructed in the early 1980s, is also showing signs of aging.
“This church was built in 1981, and there’s no AV equipment,” says Pay. “We’ve got wires going along the side (of the walls). We want the House of God to look nice. It’s not because he doesn’t bless us if it doesn’t look nice enough. We just want to make it a reverent space.”
Construction of the new school building is expected to be completed this fall, aligning with the start of the upcoming academic year.
The congregation that became Hope Lutheran began in 1957 when members of St. John’s Lutheran Church determined the area needed a second Lutheran congregation.
Early services were held at the YMCA before a church building was constructed in 1960.
Over the following decades, the congregation continued to expand. By 1979, membership had grown to 659 people, leading to the construction of the current church building on 12th Street, which opened in 1980.
Today, the school serves hundreds of students and the church facilities host a range of community events.

“With the fellowship hall on the church side, we’ll have better areas for community events. Right now, there’s just a little room, but soon they’ll have a nice (larger) space to meet,” Pay says. “Classrooms will be updated with new technology. The new building will have surveillance cameras and safety protocols. We’re excited about that because that’s the day and age we’re living in.”
Church officials say the project reflects a broader effort to improve both educational and community spaces on the campus. In addition to upgraded classrooms and technology, leaders hope the improvements will create more flexible gathering areas for church programs and local events.
If funding remains after construction of the school building is completed, the church may also consider renovating the sanctuary to further modernize the facility.
Community members are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony and follow the progress of the project as construction continues throughout the year.
