Hunzinger and FVM Launch School Capital Project Planning Video Series

Construction Owners Editorial Team

Highlights

  • Hunzinger Construction Company and Facility Value Management launched an educational video series for school districts planning capital projects.
  • The series covers four phases, from assembling project teams to construction closeout.
  • Episode 1 focuses on the role of the owner’s representative.
  • The initiative aims to help districts improve budgeting, project coordination and taxpayer investment decisions.

Video Series Targets Early-Stage School Project Planning

School districts face increasingly complex decisions when planning facility renovations, additions and new construction. Aging buildings, changing enrollment, evolving educational requirements and pressure to manage public funds can make capital projects challenging, particularly for districts that undertake major construction only once every decade or two.

Hunzinger Construction Company and its professional services division, Facility Value Management (FVM), have introduced an educational video series designed to help district leaders navigate the planning, design and construction process.

The series brings together industry professionals to share practical guidance and lessons learned. It focuses on when to engage project specialists, how to coordinate their responsibilities and how to make informed decisions throughout a project’s life cycle.

The first episode examines the role of the owner’s representative and the importance of building the project team before developing the construction plan.

Four Phases Addressed in the Series

The planned series covers four stages of school capital project delivery:

  • Building the team before the plan: Explores the owner’s representative’s role in establishing project direction and coordinating early decisions.
  • Selecting design and construction partners: Addresses the selection of architects, construction managers and other key project participants. This episode is listed as coming soon.
  • Preconstruction: Examines how to align budgets, design and expectations before construction begins. This episode is also listed as coming soon.
  • Construction and closeout: Focuses on protecting the school district’s interests during construction and project completion.

The series addresses common planning challenges, including facility assessments that lack implementation strategies, design development that advances before costs are evaluated, and construction teams brought in too late to provide meaningful input.

These issues can contribute to redesign, budget overruns, scheduling conflicts and difficult discussions with school boards and taxpayers. Early coordination among facility planners, owner’s representatives, architects, construction managers and cost consultants can help districts evaluate options and establish a more realistic project roadmap.

Why It Matters for Education Construction

School capital projects involve public investment and must balance facility needs, educational priorities, schedules and community expectations. Engaging the right expertise at the appropriate stage can help districts identify risks earlier and make better-informed decisions before committing to major expenditures.

FVM provides program management, owner representation, and project and facility planning and management services. As Hunzinger’s professional services division, it draws on the construction company’s resources and experience to support owners throughout the life cycle of their buildings and projects.

The video series is intended to help school leaders understand where specialist expertise can add value rather than prescribe which firms they should hire. Its central message is that project outcomes depend not only on partner selection, but also on when those partners become involved.
