The availability of skilled electrical workers remains a key issue for construction owners and contractors as demand continues to rise across power, utility, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) reported continued membership growth, highlighting an expanding labor pool for sectors that depend on qualified electrical craft professionals.
During its annual Membership Development conference in Atlanta, IBEW leaders outlined efforts to strengthen organizing activities across all areas of the electrical industry. The organization reported adding more than 30,000 new members over the past year, increasing total membership to more than 900,000, the highest level recorded since 1991.
Conference discussions focused on expanding union representation throughout the electrical industry and encouraging local unions to pursue additional organizing opportunities across North America. Union leadership emphasized that continued membership growth depends on participation from local organizations and individual members.
The event also recognized local unions, business managers, local organizers, and rank-and-file organizers for achievements in membership expansion and improvements in market share.
IBEW presented Organizing Impact Awards to individuals and local unions across multiple districts for their organizing efforts. Additional awards recognized locals that demonstrated strong performance in market share growth and year-over-year membership increases.
The recognition program highlighted accomplishments in both inside and outside electrical construction sectors while acknowledging sustained growth over multi-year periods.
An expanding skilled electrical workforce is significant for construction owners, developers, and contractors facing growing demand from data center construction, utility modernization, manufacturing investments, transportation infrastructure, and renewable energy projects. Increased availability of trained electricians can help support project delivery as labor availability continues to influence construction schedules and procurement planning across North America.
