Highlights

  • Emergency stabilization work will allow pedestrian and bicycle access to resume across Long Bridge near Sandpoint, Idaho.
  • Engineers installed custom steel support brackets to reinforce critical structural components.
  • Restricted travel paths will remain in place while additional repairs are planned.
  • Long-term rehabilitation work and structural evaluations will continue after the bridge reopens.

Emergency stabilization work has enabled the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to restore pedestrian and bicycle access across Long Bridge connecting Sandpoint and Sagle. The reopening follows several weeks of structural repairs after inspections identified significant deterioration that required the bridge's temporary closure.

Emergency Stabilization Work

ITD coordinated engineers, bridge inspectors, maintenance personnel, and a local contractor to complete repairs that support the bridge's most critical structural areas. The work included designing, fabricating, and installing custom steel support brackets beneath the bridge deck to reinforce weakened girder locations.

The stabilization measures redistribute structural loads, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to safely use the crossing while remaining within designated travel corridors.

Although the bridge will reopen, portions of the structure will remain restricted as additional repairs are planned and evaluated.

Traffic Control and Ongoing Repairs

Temporary traffic control devices, including cones, barrels, and caution tape, will direct users through approved travel paths before more permanent barriers are installed.

ITD will continue engineering evaluations and develop long-term repair solutions for the aging bridge. Users are advised to remain within designated pathways and avoid restricted areas while future rehabilitation work proceeds.

The reopening also restores pedestrian access ahead of the annual Long Bridge Swim scheduled for Aug. 1, allowing event participants and support personnel to use the crossing under controlled conditions.

Why It Matters

Emergency bridge stabilization projects demonstrate the importance of rapid inspection, engineering, and construction coordination in maintaining critical transportation infrastructure. For transportation agencies, contractors, and bridge maintenance specialists, the Long Bridge repairs highlight the role of targeted structural interventions in restoring public access while longer-term rehabilitation strategies are developed.
