Southern Illinois is set for more than $26 million in rest area improvements as the Illinois Department of Transportation expands truck parking and upgrades accessibility at two interstate facilities. The projects at Fort Massac and Salt Kettle will use a $13.2 million federal grant, with Illinois funding the remaining project costs.
The Fort Massac rest area on Interstate 24 in Metropolis will undergo demolition and reconstruction. The project will increase truck parking capacity from 19 spaces to 64 and add ADA-compliant parking.
Plans also call for up to four assisted-use restrooms designed to provide additional accessibility features. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and continue for approximately 18 months.
The expanded facility is intended to address truck parking demand along the interstate while improving access for travelers with disabilities.
The Salt Kettle rest area on Interstate 74 near Oakwood is planned for a separate expansion. The project will add up to 41 truck parking stalls, including four ADA-compliant spaces, along with road improvements.
IDOT expects the Salt Kettle project to be let in 2027, with construction targeted to begin by fall of that year.
The two projects are part of broader improvements across IDOT-maintained rest areas. Statewide work includes building renovations, entrance and exit ramp improvements, additional restrooms, parking lot upgrades, sidewalk work and ADA improvements.
Truck parking capacity remains an important infrastructure issue in Illinois, where trucks carry a significant share of freight moving through the state. IDOT reports approximately 11,000 truck parking spaces statewide, with about 94% of existing spaces regularly used.
The Fort Massac and Salt Kettle investments combine freight-support infrastructure with accessibility improvements. The projects are supported through the federal Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, or BUILD, program, which is funding infrastructure projects across transportation sectors.
For contractors and infrastructure stakeholders, the work represents upcoming opportunities tied to rest area reconstruction, parking expansion, roadway improvements and accessibility upgrades in Illinois.
