The rapid expansion of U.S. data center construction is increasing demand for skilled workers across installation, maintenance, operations and other mission-critical trades. Interplay Learning has launched a national workforce initiative with industry and workforce organizations to expand training capacity and connect employers with emerging talent.
Called America’s Mission Critical Workforce, the initiative brings together Interplay Learning, Cengage, the New American Industrial Alliance and YouthBuild as founding members. The group aims to address workforce gaps affecting data center construction and the long-term operation and maintenance of digital infrastructure.
Demand for data center workers has continued to rise even as overall U.S. job postings have declined. A July 2026 analysis from Indeed Hiring Lab found that data center job postings had more than doubled over two years, while overall U.S. job postings fell by approximately 12%.
Installation and maintenance positions represent roughly one-quarter of data center job openings, highlighting the need for workers with hands-on technical skills in addition to traditional construction labor.
The workforce challenge extends beyond recruiting. Training programs also face limits involving instructors, laboratory space and available schedules, restricting the number of people they can prepare for skilled-trade careers.
America’s Mission Critical Workforce will focus initially on expanding access to training through a digital-first pathway. The program is designed to help people begin developing job-relevant skills while creating earlier connections between employers and potential workers.
The initiative plans to identify priority roles across data center construction, operations and maintenance and align workforce development efforts with those needs.
Simulation-based learning, online instruction, virtual reality and artificial intelligence-powered training are among the technologies that can supplement classroom instruction and on-the-job experience.
The approach is intended to increase the number of learners programs can serve while helping workers develop skills that can transfer from construction activities into longer-term operations and maintenance positions.
The founding alliance includes organizations representing education, workforce development and industrial interests. Cengage brings its education-to-employment focus, while the New American Industrial Alliance contributes an employer-driven industrial workforce perspective. YouthBuild adds a network focused on helping young people who are out of school and work gain education, credentials and job skills.
America’s Mission Critical Workforce is accepting applications from data center operators, contractors, employers, community colleges and workforce development organizations interested in participating.
Data center owners and developers face workforce requirements that extend beyond the initial construction phase. Electrical, mechanical, HVAC, controls, maintenance and other skilled trades remain important as facilities transition from construction into operations.
Expanding training capacity could give owners and contractors another channel for developing job-ready talent while helping workforce organizations prepare workers for both near-term construction demand and longer-term facility operations.
