The funding, awarded through the Seed Community Development Anchor Institution Fund as part of Maryland’s 2026 Capital Budget, represents a key element of Governor Wes Moore’s “Capital of Quantum” initiative. The grant will be used to support capital equipping and site improvements for IonQ’s planned approximately 100,000-square-foot facility, which will serve as the company’s primary center for trapped-ion quantum hardware manufacturing and advanced research.
State officials have designated IonQ as a “Seed Anchor Institution,” a classification intended to stimulate sustained economic growth, foster high-value job creation, and anchor quantum-focused development across the National Capital region. The headquarters project builds on IonQ’s expanding footprint in Maryland and leverages its proximity to the University of Maryland, strengthening collaboration between academic research and industrial-scale quantum production.

The grant also forms part of a broader $69.5 million statewide community revitalization package aimed at supporting infrastructure-grade technological investment and strengthening local economies. For IonQ, the funding addresses the specialized engineering and facility requirements necessary to support next-generation quantum systems, including utility-scale platforms such as IonQ Tempo.
In addition to advancing quantum research and manufacturing capabilities, the project aligns with Maryland’s broader economic development priorities, including initiatives designed to address disparities through targeted investment in “Just Communities” and competitive growth programs. State leaders view the headquarters development as a cornerstone investment that positions Maryland to compete globally in quantum computing while generating long-term economic and workforce benefits.
Once completed, the College Park headquarters is expected to play a central role in IonQ’s global operations, supporting innovation, talent development, and the commercialization of quantum technologies as the sector moves toward broader enterprise and government adoption.
