The project management and construction management extension covers Jacobs’ continued work on thyssenkrupp Steel’s direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Germany, which is designed to produce about 2.5 million metric tons of direct reduced iron annually.
Jacobs will continue providing project management office, construction management and assembly management services as the facility advances toward first iron production. Its responsibilities include coordinating design, logistics and construction activities.
On site, Jacobs is overseeing civil works, logistics and quality assurance while coordinating material movement and assembly activities among contractors. The team is also working with thyssenkrupp Steel on health, safety and environmental performance.
The Duisburg facility is being developed to replace coal-fired blast furnace production with a hydrogen-capable direct reduction process. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce approximately 2.5 million metric tons of direct reduced iron each year.
Jacobs was initially selected for the program and construction management role in August 2023. The latest contract extension continues its involvement as construction progresses.
The project is part of Jacobs’ broader work in Germany across energy, industrial decarbonization and infrastructure. The company also supports grid expansion programs and the SuedLink high-voltage transmission project.
The continued construction management role highlights the coordination requirements involved in large industrial facilities that integrate new production technologies. For owners, contractors and project teams, the Duisburg project also demonstrates the need to manage complex construction interfaces, logistics, material flow, safety and quality across a large-scale industrial development.
