
Campus energy modernization projects continue to demonstrate how advanced building systems can improve sustainability and operational performance. Johnson Controls has received the 2026 Joseph M. Brillhart IDEA Innovation Award for its work on a district energy project at the University of Windsor that combines waste heat recovery with hybrid chiller technology.
The International District Energy Association recognized Johnson Controls for developing a hybrid steam-electric solution that supports the University of Windsor's decarbonization strategy.
The project included modernization of the university's Energy Conversion Centre through the installation of a 1,200-ton YORK YST Steam Turbine Centrifugal Chiller and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator. The upgraded system captures exhaust steam and converts it into usable energy, reducing dependence on grid electricity during peak demand periods.
The University of Windsor is the first higher education institution in Canada to implement a dual-drive hybrid steam-electric turbine chiller.
According to project estimates, the upgraded energy system is expected to achieve approximately 82% of the university's 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target while reducing electricity demand by roughly 60% during Ontario's peak demand periods.
By using recovered steam to generate cooling, the university is expected to lower long-term energy costs while improving operational flexibility and reducing emissions.
The IDEA Innovation Award recognizes district energy projects that demonstrate measurable environmental and operational improvements with potential for broader industry application.
