Johnson Controls has secured a major federal contract worth up to $630 million to supply its advanced Metasys building automation systems for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The agreement reinforces Johnson Controls’ position as a trusted partner in large-scale government infrastructure and energy management projects.

According to the award notice, the initial three-year base contract is valued at $377.9 million, with an additional optional 24-month ordering period that could raise the total to $630 million. Work under this contract will begin August 1, with Johnson Controls as the sole bidder for the award.
The comprehensive scope includes the procurement, installation, maintenance, and service of Metasys automation systems that manage HVAC, fire alarm safety, utility monitoring, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), contamination detection, filtration and response, electronic security, and electric, gas, and water metering.
The contract underscores the Department of Defense’s continued focus on integrating advanced automation technologies to improve building performance, energy efficiency, and safety across its facilities.
The latest version of the Metasys platform, released last year, introduced powerful new capabilities designed to help facilities move closer to autonomous operations. The Metasys 14.0 software features airside and waterside HVAC applications aligned with ASHRAE Guideline 36, ensuring high-performance sequences of operation that boost efficiency and consistency.

“Today’s building landscape, its technologies and challenges are evolving at a rapid pace,” said Babak Haghayeghi, product management director of building automation systems, global products, at Johnson Controls, in an email last year to Facilities. “While a periodic release is updated with new features and capabilities to respond to those changes and challenges, operators must wait for the release date to access them.”
Haghayeghi emphasized how a continual release model can deliver more value by enabling operators to access the latest features as they’re developed, without waiting for traditional version rollouts. “This on-demand access can help ensure a building’s BAS can evolve in time with the industry, helping facilities gain a competitive advantage,” he said.
This multi-billion-dollar win further highlights Johnson Controls’ commitment to delivering next-generation building solutions that align with federal sustainability goals and operational demands. By deploying the Metasys system at scale, the company aims to help the USACE achieve tighter control over critical facility operations, ensure occupant safety, and streamline long-term maintenance and energy use.
The project is also expected to support high-quality jobs across the U.S., with local teams and specialized technicians overseeing installation and ongoing service for Metasys systems in Department of Defense buildings nationwide.
As government agencies continue to modernize infrastructure with smart technologies, Johnson Controls’ award signals growing momentum for comprehensive building automation solutions that integrate real-time analytics, robust security, and resilient utility management.
