Retail construction projects often require contractors to balance substantial interior work with uninterrupted customer operations. In Bismarck, North Dakota, Kraus-Anderson has completed a renovation and expansion of the Scheels store at Kirkwood Mall, adding retail and storage capacity while maintaining the store’s operations during construction.
The project included a 32,400-square-foot interior remodel along with 20,709 square feet of storage and a 9,734-square-foot retail expansion.
R.L. Engebretson Architecture designed the project. The expanded retail area provides additional space for footwear, the toy shop and boys’ and girls’ clothing.
The construction program also included fire-rated wall construction and upgrades to the store’s fire sprinkler system.
Construction began in March 2026 and was divided into six phases. Kraus-Anderson scheduled crews to work at night to reduce the impact of construction activities on normal retail operations.
The project adds to Kraus-Anderson’s experience delivering work for Scheels locations across the Midwest. The company has completed new construction, additions and renovations at Scheels stores in Minot and Grand Forks, North Dakota; Eau Claire, Wisconsin; and Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Kraus-Anderson is also serving as construction manager for Scheels projects in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Blaine, Minnesota.
The Bismarck project illustrates the logistical requirements of expanding an operating retail facility. Phased scheduling and nighttime construction allowed Kraus-Anderson to complete structural, life-safety and interior improvements while limiting disruption to ongoing store operations.
For retail owners and developers, the project highlights the importance of construction sequencing when renovations and expansions must be delivered within an active commercial environment.
